Classic is Always the Best Choice.
Recently I came across some Youtube videos of a popular designer on HGTV from the early 2000s. I remember loving the finished design as a teen but now years later, none of the designs had stood the test of time. They seemed garrish, over the top and unfortunately someone had paid good money to update these spaces. During that same period my parents had redesigned their family room keeping the wood paneling but adding a mission style classic sofa in hunter green, matching mission dining table and chairs with a subtle stripe and chevron upholstery pattern in green, with red, beige and black accents They chose drapes in matching hunter green and classic leather lounge chair in light beige leather with a patterned rug also in a creamy beige. It's 25 years later and the room is still perfection. The sofa was reupholstered in the same classic fabric and new microfiber curtains in a similar hunter green color. To this day when people come into the room for the first time they comment on how calming and chill the space is. The lesson is simple. Classic is always the best choice. Pick classic styles that work with a space, use patterns and colors that work together on a color wheel and keep accessories to minimum. This is a lesson that applies in every area of personal style. Classic pieces of good quality and basic colors and patterns will last longer, be less wasteful and serve better than passing fads. Classic design is the winning formula every time. It doesn't mean boring or stale but a tried and true style that appeals on an individual level. That's the right tone and flow. It's not your grandmother's classic. It's current and modern while remaining traditional. That's why vintage is so appealing. If a style works today and worked fifty years ago, that's a keeper. Why reinvent when you can just repeat what works. That's essentially classic.
